Ruth Meena

Researcher, Tanzania

Ruth Meena is a feminist activist and educator who taught for thirty-five years at various levels including secondary school, teachers colleges and university.  She has won several awards including a Senior Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Stanford in the USA, Ford Foundation and IDRC research competitions, as well as being a visiting scholar at several universities in the USA and Canada. She has a passion for working with young people as they are a potential transformative force against oppressive systems, including patriarchy. She is now running a multi-disciplinary learning center whose mission is to support young people to ‘Be the Best they Can Be.’   Of her publications the one she treasures most is ‘A conversation with Bibi Titi’ in Marjori Mbilinyi and Mary Rusimbi (2003) Activist Voices: Feminist Struggles for an Alternative World. She is a member of a variety of professional and civil organisations, and the current chairperson of the Tanzania Gender Networking Program.
